[Views From a Citizen Cyclist]⠀
⠀
As a citizen cyclist and cycling advocate in a city that has not fully accepted cycling as a valid form of transportation. I’m also an entrepreneur running stylish bicycle accessory boutique. Our lifestyle brand⠀
is built on the idea that cycling isn't just for sport but a normal everyday activity. ⠀
⠀
★ Our focus is on urban cycling as a form of transport. Our website presents powerful, rarely seen images of bicycle normalcy, in a region where sport and recreational cycling reign supreme. ⠀
⠀
★ We’re promoting a lifestyle we want to see. The more people buy into the idea that cycling is a normal everyday activity that millions partake in every single day the more likely we are to design urban spaces that connect people with place. I believe that we need to be the change we want to see.⠀
⠀

Spring is here 🌺 ⠀
⠀
It’s a great time to take your bike to the local bike shop for that yearly tune-up and give it a good wash. ⠀
⠀
Truth be told, I’m a bit lazy and rely on my husband to do this stuff. I’m capable but I don’t like it. I will, however, wash and polish my bike for the #TweedRide! ⠀
⠀
How about you? Do you tune-up your bike or get your local shop to do it for you? I’m curious to know.

Take me back to when the sun was up and shining bright and warm. I’m dreaming of my summer vacation. ⠀
⠀
I’m heading to The Netherlands 🇳🇱 my home base will be in Haarlem with my husband’s parents. We also need some heat so we’re heading to southern France with our bikes. We’ll be camping ⛺️ and riding every day. Tour cycling is one of my fav things to do. It’s such a great way to experience a new city. ⠀
⠀
When I get back to my home base I’ll be heading to the University of Amsterdam to take the Planning the Cycling City course. I’ll be traveling from Haarlem, home base, by bicycle to the bus stop where I’ll park my bike for the day. When I arrive in Amsterdam I’ll have a bicycle waiting for me and I’ll ride to the university. The university provides us with a bicycle during the course, how amazing is that!⠀
⠀
I’ve been to The Netherlands more times than I can remember but I’ve never shared my experiences before. So I’ve decided I’ll be posting my experience of being in The Netherlands here. ⠀
⠀
My fundraising campaign may be over but the results are the same... Amsterdam, here I come!!⠀
⠀

[March - UMBRELLA MONTH ]⠀
Apparently ☂ have been around for 4 thousand years... no idea what they looked like back then, but l think I can say that the umbrella is one of the most widely used product the world over. ⠀
⠀
It has branched well beyond the weather to become a fashion accessory. And they’re not just for the ladies. Some fun facts:⠀
⠀
Since March is Umbrella Month, it’s a good idea to know at least 7 great things to make the most out of the month.⠀
⠀
1. Buy an Umbrella – One of the greatest ways to celebrate umbrella month is to go out and buy a cool umbrella. Now is the time to go out and buy it. Guaranteed you will get a lot of use out of it as spring takes hold. ⠀
⠀
2. Learn a New Dance – While Fred Astaire might have tossed his aside to dance. ⠀
⠀
3. Decorate the Porch – One of the many ways that you can use an umbrella is through decoration. ⠀
⠀
4. Get to Know the History – get to know the history of the umbrella as a tribute to umbrella month.⠀
⠀
5. Umbrellas in Art – Look at many of the paintings throughout history and how they have been used. ⠀
⠀
6. You will be able to enjoy looking at the many different ways in which umbrellas have been used as you celebrate umbrella month.⠀
⠀
7. Go Out in the Rain – Probably one of the best ways to celebrate Umbrella Month is to get out in the rain. Enjoy being able to stand out in the rain while not getting soaked. ⠀
⠀
Last but not least, pop your umbrella ☂ on to your handlebars. Keeping you dry from the top down. You’ll of course need to purchase our umbrella and holder, they’re made especially for the bicycle. ⠀
⠀
Happy shopping!⠀

So this is where you park your bike at Market Square? This bike rack is so small and flimsy. The rack isn’t bolted down and you can pick it up with one hand. Still, parking is free. 🚲 so I locked my bike to a post in the courtyard. Only safe place to lock it. ⠀
⠀
When I returned to my bike this is the note I found stuck to my bicycle. Apparently this public market doesn’t want bicycle traffic. I also think they forgot that #YYJ is building out our protected bicycle lanes (one is directly outside of Market Square) which will eventually bring more people on bikes to these shops. The history with Market Square is that there has always been a fairly large amount of bikes parked there, largely because of the school. ⠀
⠀
The Market just recently had a new facelift and it looks great! They’ve added beautiful wooden tables and bright orange tables all over the court yard. What a great way to build out a community for people to gather! ⠀
⠀
But, I’m disappointed that the Bike lockup they provide does not meet the needs of people who use their bicycle as a means of transport. Telling us to use street bike parking...⠀
⠀
I think they’re missing the point. It’s pretty clear to me that other people wanting to park their bikes here have also done the same thing and received this printed violation note. But have they stopped to wonder why we’re locking our bikes up to these posts? Is it because there’s a need that they are not meeting with the public?⠀
⠀
We ride our bike out of convenience and taking away bike parking that has an established history of being there, we’ll is just sad and not falling in line with the great changes the city of Vic has embarked on. ⠀
⠀
I think we can do better. 🚲⠀

[Going Dutch]⠀
You may already know that my husband is Dutch. It was a long romantic story that began in Florence, Italy and ended with him immigrating to Canada for me. ⠀
⠀
One of the lovely things I cherish about him is his Dutch sensibilities around the bicycle. Laszlo re-introduced me to my bicycle and my love for riding. He also showed me that to him and his fellow country-men & women, is that riding a bike is no big deal and there’s no special thought that goes into it. It's just how you get around and go places. ⠀
⠀
No one cares if it's raining, snowing or super windy. It's how you get to your university classes, your office, pick up groceries, go to the pub and yes, even pick up your date at the end of the day. ⠀
⠀
In fact, my husbands parents just road their bikes from Haarlem to the train station (brought their bikes on the train) and headed to the East to a village called Zwolle. From there they road around the village and to other nearby towns. It was a beautiful day trip that was made possible for them and easy to move about the new village where they explored by bicycle to the fullest. Their bicycles you ask? City bikes, similar to the one in the photo. ⠀
⠀
This is just a normal way for them to travel. Its easy, convenient and affordable. By the way, they are in their '70s & '80's.⠀
⠀
This may seem like utopia and somewhat unattainable but it is where we need to go. Building cities for people create opportunities like these. We have a ways to go but it is possible. ⠀
⠀
We're fundraising to bring fresh ideas on urban planning and design to Victoria. ⠀⠀
⠀
In the fall I’ll be presenting to the city what it’s like to truly be a cycling city. The goal of the presentation is to encourage and empower citizens to become advocates for change and active voices in the conversations affecting design decisions that enhance the places we live, work, and play that deeply impact our health and well-being.⠀⠀

[THE DUTCH AFFECT] Is riding your bike effortlessly throughout your day. ⠀
⠀
★ In many North American cities it may seem almost impossible to do everything you need to do in a day, all by bicycle. And yet the Dutch do it every single day. ⠀
⠀
★ The difference of course is the infrastructure, but that’s not everything. There is a deep and rich history with the Dutch people and their Bicycle. Since the invention of the bicycle, the dutch have used the bike to go shopping, to their jobs in the factories and to move about the city. It was never about sport. ⠀
⠀
☞ The interesting thing is that the bicycle, in North America, is mostly known for sport cycling and road riding. Could our North American ‘Bike culture’ for fast riding be the reason it’s so difficult to get people to buy into the idea that cycling could be a daily thing that you just do because it’s fast and convenient? ⠀
This is a curiosity I have with cycling ⠀
⠀
★ This summer I’m going to the University of Amsterdam to attend the Planning the Cycling City summer program. Here, I’ll learn a host of new skills that support meaningful understanding of developing & fostering of cycling cities. The program focuses on the impacts of history, policy, infrastructure, planning, and culture within the context of urban cycling in the Netherlands. ⠀
⠀
★ I will present my findings in Victoria in the fall of 2018 with invitations to our Mayor, council, general public & cycling enthusiasts alike. The goal of the presentation is to encourage and empower citizens to become advocates for change and active voices in the conversations affecting planning and design decisions that enhance the places we live, work, and play that deeply impact our health and well-being. ⠀

I’ll be immersed in the Dutch language (I understand it better than I can speak it) and experience true urban cycling. ⠀ ⠀ ★ I’ll be in The Netherlands for 5 weeks and I’ll share what it’s like to be in the worlds capital bike city. And because I have an inside with my Dutch husband I’ll be able show you and Amsterdam you’ve never see. ⠀ ⠀ ☞ You can read more about my travels and plans over on our blog. [NATIONAL TULIP DAY] ⠀
⠀
🌷Tulpis arriving in my local flower shops always reminds me that spring is coming. ⠀
⠀
These beauties are my favorite, they are the Dutch national flower, my wedding bouquet and always remind me of my Dutch husband. ⠀
⠀
Prices on tulips have dropped this year, grab yourself a bouquet and a cup of your favorite coffee, sit by the morning fire and start your Weekend nice and slow.
